| Bay State Winter Games Wrap Up 25th Year |
|
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2010 Bay State Winter Games in Northern Berkshire county of Massachusetts. The 25th anniversary was an amazing event, and we can't say enough good things about all the people who helped make this possible including the athletes, volunteers and facilities.
We hope to see everyone back next year as we start working towards our next quarter century of memories. |

| 25th Winter Games Conclude on Sunday |
With alpine skiing in the books, figure skating and masters ice hockey take center stage on Sunday. Ice hockey will hold a couple more pool games for the Over 40 division and then finish up with the gold medal games for both divisions early this afternoon in North Adams. The figure skating competition at Williams College wraps up at 6pm tonight, but not before a slate full of action. |

| Skate Show and Alpine Skiing Highlight Second Day |
|
Action has come to an end in the second day of competition at the 2010 Winter Games. A ton of metals were distributed at figure skating and alpine skiing.
All the results from Friday and Saturday can be found on the Winter Games Results website.
The Games finish up Sunday with figure skating beginning at 8am at Williams College.

| Day Two of Winter Games Underway |
|
The second day of figure skating action has begun at Williams College. Skaters took the ice Saturday morning at 8am. Figure skating action will continue nonstop throughout the day until 6pm.
The Bay State Skate Figure Skating Show will follow the competition at 7:30pm. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased at the door of the ice rink at Williams.
Alpine skiing and masters ice hockey are also taking place throughtout the day.

| Golden Start to Winter Games' Silver Anniversary |
|
The 2010 Bay State Winter Games kicked off its 25th annual event on Friday morning with USFS Figure Skating. Rebecca Jacobs of Natick (pictured above) was one of the Games' first gold medal winners. ISI Figure Skating will follow this afternoon.

| Alpine Skiing Competition Spots Remain Open |
Registration is still open for the 2010 Bay State Winter Games Alpine Skiing competition. The two-run, giant slalom race begins at 9:30am on Saturday, January 23 at Bousquet Ski Area in Pittsfield, MA. This year’s competition features middle school, high school, open and masters divisions.
Skiers can register online for $50. The fee includes entry into the competition, a Bay State Games T-shirt and an all-day lift ticket for limited access to Bousquet Ski Area. Registration will remain open up until and including the morning of the competition. Competitors can sign up onsite, but please arrive at Bousquet no later than 7:30am on Saturday to ensure a spot in the race. |

| Skate Show Tickets Still Available |
The Bay State Skate Figure Skating Show will take place Saturday, January 23 at 7:30pm at the Lansing Chapman Rink at Williams College. The show features national, state and regional skating stars, as well as Bay State Games medal winners.

Hicks named '09 Bay State Games Athlete of the Year
|
|
From the more than 8,000 Massachusetts participants in the Bay State Summer and Winter Games, Amy Hicks has been selected as the 2009 Athlete of the Year.
Hicks, a Needham resident, is a senior competitor who won gold medals in both synchronized swimming and track & field at this year's Summer Games.
The Athlete of the Year Award involves over 38 states games programs across the country which represents over 400,000 nationwide participants annually. The program was developed to recognize outstanding state games participants from all member states. Each state games selects their representative who is then forwarded for consideration for recognition as the National Athlete of the Year.
The National Congress of State Games and each member state select their Athlete of the Year representatives based on a series of criteria which include length of participation in state games, number of medals won, sportsmanship, attitude and effort, overall athletic participation and achievement, the positive manner in which the athlete represents the spirit of amateur athletics and the state games movement, as well as other factors. |

| High School Spirit Program Extended to Winter Games |
The High School Spirit Program, which annually rewards Massachusetts high schools with more than $5,000 in grants, has been extended to Winter Games participants.
When signing up for the Winter Games, be sure to choose a high school, whether it be yours, your child's or simply one in the area that you live. Each vote goes towards a tally for that school. After the Summer Games in July, nine schools will be awarded grants as a result of these votes.

Four Winning Schools Selected for Largest
Kids Fitness Challenge Ever
|
The four recipients of a $500 grant for participating in the fall edition of the Kids Fitness Challenge are Alice B. Beal School (Springfield, MA), Arlington Elementary School (Lawrence, MA), Stony Brook Elementary School (Brewster, MA) and Woburn Street School (Wilmington, MA).
In total, 21,228 kids from schools across the commonwealth took part in the fall edition of the Kids Fitness Challenge. This was the largest number of participants in the three year history of the program with the total representing a 25 percent increase from the previous high in the fall of 2008.
Since November of 2006, the Kids Fitness Challenge has attracted nearly 100,000 elementary and middle school students from across the commonwealth with $12,000 in cash grants distributed to selected schools that participated.
The next Challenge will take place in April of 2010. |

Ferrie Named 2009 Jack Aborn Scholarship Winner
|
The 2009 Jack Aborn Memorial Archery Scholarship was awarded to Amanda Ferrie of Auburn, Mass. Amanda is currently a senior Johnson & Wales where she has twice been named to the Dean’s List and started an archery program. She is ranked in the top 20 nationally as a collegiate archer. Amanda participated in Bay State Summer Games archery competition in 2004-2007 and in 2009.
The scholarship is a $250 Scholarship that will be awarded to a participant in the Bay State Games Archery competition. |

Registration is now open for the fall 2009 edition of the Kids Fitness Challenge. All Massachusetts elementary and middle schools are eligible.
You can sign up your school today by clicking on the Register tab in the Kids Fitness Challenge menu on the left of the screen and entering your school's information. Athletes Set 19 BSG Records at '09 Track & Field Meet
|
It was an incredible site this weekend at MIT, as 19 new Bay State Summer Games records were established in track and field. Highlighting the incredible individual performances was Hyde Park's Carla Forbes. The 14 year old set an unofficial national record in the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 3 inches. |

Southeast Blanks Metro, 2-0, in Baseball Opener
|
Riding a strong start from Hanover's David Gibson, the Southeast beat Metro, 2-0, to begin baseball action in the 2009 Summer Games. More than 50 scouts and college coaches were on hand during the game keeping a close eye on the talented players from greater Boston and southeast Mass.

MacLagan Takes First at Rifle Shooting Qualifier
|

Sarah MacLagan (pictured above with Rifle Shooting commissioner Bob McCorry) placed first at the Bay State Games Rifle Shooting qualifier with a score of 547-13x out of a possible 600 on a dark, cold and windy day Sunday, June 28 at the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club in Reading, MA.
The finals for Rifle Shooting will be held at the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club on Thursday, July 9 and Sunday, July 12. Visit the Rifle Shooting webpage for more info. |

Inaugural Trap Shooting Competition Hits Mark
|
Congratulations to all the medal winners at the Bay State Summer Games' inaugural trap shooting competition held Saturday, June 27 at the North Leominster Rod and Gun Clun in Lunenburg, MA. The competition was a great success, and we hope to build on it for 2010.
More than 50 shooters took part with medals awarded in four age/gender divisions. Check out the Results webpage to see who took home gold. |

Verizon Future Leaders Scholarship Winners Selected
|
The Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation is proud to name the winners of the 2009 Verizon Future Leaders Scholarship. The following student-athletes were selected based on outstanding leadership through community service, academic excellence and athletic achievement:
Kendra Cheng: Franklin, Bishop Feehan High School
Cheng has been an outstanding contributor in the classroom and pool at Bishop Feehan. The swim team captain is state champion in the 200 I.M., 100 Butterfly and 4x50 Freestyle Relay and holds six school records. As a result, she was named to the Boston Herald and Boston Globe All-Scholastic teams. Not to be outdone by her athletic accomplishments, academically Cheng ranks in the top one percent of her class as a straight A student and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is vice-president of Math Honor society, president of MOVE Club and a geometry tutor. The Franklin native also organizes and conducts free swim clinics at her local YMCA.
Connor MacKenzie: Harvard, Groton School
MacKenzie transferred to the Groton School at the beginning of his junior year and quickly became one of the school’s top leaders. The Harvard resident serves as treasurer of the student council, president of the InvenTeam, and head coordinator of the tutoring program. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, and French and Spanish clubs. Named lacrosse captain for his senior season, MacKenzie was also a two-time state champion in soccer at the Bromfield School.
Tegan O’Neill: Stamford (VT), Miss Hall’s School
O’Neill has won numerous gold medals as a figure skater in the Bay State Winter Games. The Stamford, VT resident is a high honors student in the top five percent of her class. She is also a member of the Cum Laude Society, school secretary on the Judicial Committee, editor of the school newspaper, and a contributor to the Big/Little Sister program.
Zachary Price: Franklin, Franklin High School
Price is a three-sport athlete at Franklin HS -- captain of the basketball team, starting pitcher in baseball and backup quarterback on the football team. Possessing great leadership skills, he has served as Class President for all four years of high school. The honors student also is a member of the prom committee and is a peer leader. He does this all while holding down a part-time job.
Matt Sherman: Burlington, Burlington High School
Sherman, a wrestling captain at Burlington High School, has won multiple state championships including a fourth place finish at the New England Championships. This high honors student ranks 11 in his class of 250. The Burlington resident volunteers at Boston Home for MS patients and is a peer tutor. He is also a member of the student government and SADD.
Emily Theurer: Burlington, Burlington High School
Theurer is a straight A student who ranks third in her class of 250 and is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Club. She is a decorated figure skater, spending several hours a day, six days a week, on the ice practicing and as an instructor. Despite her busy schedule, she has found time to give back as president of the Community Service Club and a peer mentor. She also recently had the opportunity to travel to Asia as part of the Pathway to China program.

Bay State Games Athlete Drafted by Red Sox
|
Congratulations to Michael Yastrzemski, of Andover, for being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 36th round of 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
The St. John's Prep product was a member of the Northeast baseball team that took the silver medal at last summer's Bay State Games. |

Winners of $500 Grants Selected from Challenge
|
The Bay State Games are excited to name the winners of the Kids Fitness Challenge for April 2009. The four recipients of a $500 grant are:
Jefferson Elementary in Franklin
Mary Fonseca Elementary in Fall River
St. Joan of Arc/St. George in Chicopee
Tyngsborough Middle School in Tyngsborough.
In total, almost 10,000 kids from schools across the commonwealth took part in the spring edition of the Kids Fitness Challenge. Along with the more than 13,000 students who participated in the Fall Edition of the Challenge, in excess of 23,000 kids from across the commonwealth learned the lessons of a healthy, active lifestyle this school year through the Challenge.
Since November of 2006, the Kids Fitness Challenge, presented by SBLI with contributing funds from the Boston Bruins Foundation, has attracted nearly 75,000 elementary and middle school students from across the commonwealth with $10,000 in cash grants distributed to selected schools that participated. |

Bay State Games and Boston Sports U18 Website Team Up to Find Young Blogger for Summer Games
|
The Bay State Games and local sports website www.bostonsportsu18.com are looking for youth bloggers who can report on the 2009 Summer Games.
Ideally, bloggers should be between the ages of 10 and 17 and be passionate about sports and journalism. Bloggers will report on a variety of sports and have unique access to players, coaches and Bay State Games personnel. No experience is necessary. Anyone interested should e-mail Mike Winn at info@bostonsportsu18.com.
www.bostonsportsu18.com is a website that will report on all of the Boston Sports teams and feature training tips, nutrition tips, pictures and videos, high school reports, interviews with athletes, product reviews and much more. Bay State Games Announce Incentive Program for Massachusetts High Schools |
Following the successful model established by other state games across the country, the Bay State Games are launching an incentive program for all high school athletic departments in Massachusetts.
This program is designed to encourage high school athletic administrators to promote the Bay State Games while providing the opportunity to win much needed cash grants for their high school athletic programs.
There is no obligation on the part of the athletic director or the school. There is no sign up for the program and all schools will be included when we launch April 1. We simply ask all athletic directors to assist with promoting the Bay State Summer Games at your school and in your community.
