Big Changes to BSG Figure Skating Format
|
The Bay State Games is excited to announce two significant modifications to the figure skating competition at the 2011 Winter Games. The Bay State Games will now allow skaters from Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont to take part in the Winter Games. Secondly, subsequent to the USFS addition of test track and unrestricted, ISI will now offer freestyle and open freestyle divisions.
The National Congress of State Games, which governs all state games across the country, allow for participants in states that don't have a recognized figure skating competition to participate in a neighboring state that does have an event. This is the case for all of the New England states with the exception of Connecticut. It is important to note that medals for the competition and invitations for the 2011 State Games of America will be handed out using two different criteria: Medals in each division will be based strictly on results regardless of state affiliation, while invitations to the State Games of America will be handed out in each event based on the top three from each state.
The 2011 Bay State Winter Games figure skating competition will be held January 28-30 in the northern Berkshires. Registration opens on November 1. Additional information on the new formats will be posted on the Winter Games website in the coming weeks. |

| Figure Skaters Shine Among Scholarship Winners |
This summer, six student athletes from around the commonwealth were awarded $2,000 college scholarships, and among the winners were two figure skaters.
Tegan O'Neill and Emily Theurer were the first figure skaters in the two decade-long history of the scholarship.
Tegan O’Neill: Stamford (VT), Miss Hall’s School
O’Neill has won numerous gold medals as a figure skater in the Bay State Winter Games. The Stamford, VT resident is a high honors student in the top five percent of her class. She is also a member of the Cum Laude Society, school secretary on the Judicial Committee, editor of the school newspaper, and a contributor to the Big/Little Sister program.
Emily Theurer: Burlington, Burlington High School
Theurer is a straight A student who ranks third in her class of 250 and is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Club. She is a decorated figure skater, spending several hours a day, six days a week, on the ice practicing and as an instructor. Despite her busy schedule, she has found time to give back as president of the Community Service Club and a peer mentor. She also recently had the opportunity to travel to Asia as part of the Pathway to China program.

| High School Spirit Program Extended to Winter Games |
The High School Spirit Program, which annually rewards Massachusetts high schools with more than $5,000 in grants, has been extended to Winter Games participants.
When signing up for the Winter Games, be sure to choose a high school, whether it be yours, your child's or simply one in the area that you live. Each vote goes towards a tally for that school. After the Summer Games in July, nine schools will be awarded grants as a result of these votes.
